Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Group

Since the launch of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, demons, and sinister influences growing in influence within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and introduced the first table of heroes who will split off from the primary party to undertake their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team features Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With 13 cast members, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Introduction, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three separate parties: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for participants who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer the cleric might seem out of place, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—exploited the enemy for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and stealing all the powerful objects to auction.

The traitor then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and closest confidant, desires retribution.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and advises that it is a nasty environment.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their status as prominent individuals in the influential clan could help the party enter locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The fighter swore a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that control the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This results in them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

According to episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Explorers and Planners parties.

Viewers can look forward to learning which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
